3DO Interactive Multiplayer (or just 3DO) – a game console, released in 1993-1996. Panasonic, Sanyo, Creative, and Goldstar, originally developed by Dave Needle and RJ Mical of the New Technology Group. The idea of creating a console belongs to entrepreneur Trip Hawkins, who is the founder of EA Games.
At the time of release, the console had very advanced hardware capabilities: a 32-bit ARM60 processor with RISC architecture, operating at a frequency of 12.5 MHz; two graphic coprocessors; 16-bit digital signal processor and special mathematical coprocessor. All additional coprocessors were developed specifically for this console. Also, the console had 2 megabytes of RAM, 1 megabyte of video memory, and a two-speed CD drive. It was possible to simultaneously connect up to 8 joysticks (in the original way – in a chain, one connects to the other). In addition to using specially developed software, the console could play CD-audio (including CD + G support), view Photo CD and Video CD. To play the latter, it was necessary to use a special expansion card for decoding MPEG video (produced only for the American Goldstar model and Japanese Panasonic). However, only a few games took full advantage of the console’s potential.

  1. Wolfenstein 3D is a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by 3D Realms (Apogee Software). Wolfenstein 3D is the third game in the Wolfenstein series of games – the 1981 Wolf Castleen game was an inspiration for its creators.
The player takes on the role of William (BJ) Blaskowitz, the reconnaissance of World War II allies, who is trying to escape from his place of detention – Wolfenstein Castle – and performs a number of sabotage missions against the Nazi regime. At each level, the player must fight Nazi soldiers, dogs and mutants using a knife and firearms.
  2. Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters is the second game in the Star Control series, a space quest with RPG elements and arcade battles. The Alliance of Free Stars was defeated in the war and each remaining race adopted one of two alternatives from the Hierarchy: to fight for the Hierarchy as slaves or to be isolated from the outside world by a slave shield. After an all-planet referendum, earthlings chose the second. The protagonist is a descendant of a member of the Star Control government project, whose goal was to find and research artifacts left over from the forerunner race.
  3. Gex is the best-selling and best-known platform game of this console, the first in the Gex series to introduce players to a new character – a witty gecko named Hex, voiced by comedian Dana Gould. Hex and his family live in Maui, Hawaii. His mother raised him and his three younger siblings, and their father worked for NASA. Hex’s hobbies are spending time with friends, surfing and playing ukulele. One day his mother receives a phone call from NASA, in which she finds out that his father died when the rocket was launched .
